How much does floor epoxy cost?

You’ve decided to go with epoxy floors. But now you’re asking yourself, “How much epoxy do I need for this project, and how much will it cost?”. This depends on what floors you want covered, and what type of floor “system” you need in that location. We cover everything from a 1 car residential garage to a 15,000+ square foot industrial warehouse in this article.

Before we get into the coverage, we want to be sure you know what we mean by “Mils”. Mils are not the same as Millimeters. Mils are a measurement of 1/100th of an Inch. So if something is 10 Mils thick, it’s 10/100ths (1/10) of an inch thick.

Garage Floors

Garage sizes vary, so we are going with an average 1 car garage, at 12 feet by 22 feet. This gives us 264 square feet to cover in an epoxy system. Typically in a garage, people opt for a Solid Color, or a Flake System, which adds grip to the floor. For those with exotic cars and tastes, we can also install a metallic system in your garage.

We use PurEpoxy PE-100 epoxy for garage floor systems. We install a Primer coat with pigment at 10 mils thickness. We sell PE-100 epoxy in 3 gallon kits, so 2 kits for the Primer Coat will be more than enough. We then add a Top Coat at 16 mils for solid colors, or 13 mils for a Flake System. Another 2 kits will cover the Top Coat.

So, for this 1 car garage, we recommend 4 kits of PE-100. That would be $700 in PurEpoxy epoxy. Yes, this is more than you need, but that just means the floor will last longer. So, there’s a matter of choosing a solid color to add to the epoxy, or a Flake System. Adding a Flake System doesn’t increase the price that drastically, and it adds extra grip for floor safety.

Your average 2 car garage is 20 feet by 24 feet, making it 480 square feet. So, for a 2 car garage the options are the same. We recommend 7 kits of PE-100 for this project. That comes to $1,225 in PurEpoxy epoxy.

Residential Floors

Your average 2 bedroom, 2 bath homes are about 1,150 square feet. Usually, people opt for a solid color floor or a Metallic System for a resisdence. Metallic Floor Sytems are getting more and more popular with home renovations in 2021.

We use PurEpoxy PE-100 epoxy for residential floor systems also. We install a Primer coat with pigment at 10 mils thickness. We then add a Top Coat at 16 mils for solid colors, or 40 mils for a Metallic System.

So, for a solid color system you’ll need 8 kits for the Primer Coat, at 10 mils. And 12 kits for a Solid Color System at 16 mils. Or 29 kits for a Metallic System, at 40 mils thickness.

That would be a total of 20 kits for a Solid Color System, and at $175 a kit, that’s currently $3,500 in PurEpoxy epoxy. If you opt for the Metallic System, it would be total of 37 kits. That would be currently $6,475 in PurEpoxy epoxy.

Your average 4 bedroom, 3 bath home is around 2,400 square feet. So, for a solid color system you’ll need 16 kits for the Primer Coat, at 10 mils. And 24 kits for a Solid Color System at 16 mils. Or 60 kits for a Metallic System, at 40 mils thickness.

So, that would be 40 kits for a Solid Color system. At $175 a kit, that’s currently $7,000 in PurEpoxy epoxy. Or that’s 76 kits for a Metallic System, and is currently $13,300 in PurEpoxy epoxy.

Patios / Lanais

The average for a patio or lanai is 16 feet by 16 feet, or 256 square feet. Since it’s outdoors, any epoxy solid color or metallic will require a urethane finish coat to prevent UV damage. This adds to the cost but also makes the flooring system even tougher. Typically, people opt for a Quartz or Flake System, which gives the floors some grip.

A Quartz System consists of a pigmented Primer Coat at 10 mils thickness. A layer of broadcast quartz, your choice of color. Then a Build Coat at 10 mils thick. Another layer of broadcast quartz. And Finally a clear Top Coat at 10 mils thickness.

So, you’ll need 2 kits of PE-100 for the pigmented Primer Coat. And 2 for the Build Coat and 2 for the clear Top Coat, for a total of 6 kits, at $175 a kit, that’s currently $1,050 in PurEpoxy epoxy.

Basketball Courts

A full sized basketball court is 94 feet by 50 feet, or 4,700 sqare feet. This doesn’t include any sideline space for spectating. For an outdoor court, a Flake System is recommended.

A Flake System consist of a Pigmented Primer coat at 10 mils thickness. Flakes are then broadcast. Finally a clear Top Coat is added at 13 mils thickness.

So, you’ll need 32 kits for the pigmented Primer Coat. And 40 kits for the cear Top Coat. Totalling 72 kits, at $175 a kit, that’s currently $12,600 in PurEpoxy epoxy.

Large Commercial Store

PurEpoxy epoxy is “Industrial Grade”, so it’s perfect for commercial store flooring. Your average grocery store is about 10,000 square feet. Stores usually opt for a simple solid color, but most showrooms venues want a spectacular Metallic Floor System.

A Solid Color System consists of a Pigmented Primer layer at 10 mils, and a Top Coat layer at 16 mils. For a 10,000 square foot floor that’s 67 kits for the Primer layer. And 100 kits for the Top Coat. Totalling at 167 kits, that’s $29,225 in PurEpoxy Epoxy.

For a spectacular showroom Metallic Floor system, we need a Primer Layer at 10 mils, and a Top Coat at 40 mils thickness. This would total 317 kits, and currently cost $55,475 in PurEpoxy epoxy.

Industrial Warehouses

The average industrial warehouse is 15,000+ square feet. Typically, warehouse environments use simple solid colors, and safety colors on their floors. They may add grip in the Finish Coat of urethane, which hardens the floor even more against wear.

A Solid Color System consists of a Pigmented Primer layer at 10 mils, and a Top Coat layer at 16 mils. For a 15,000 square foot floor that’s 100 kits for the Primer layer. And 150 kits for the Top Coat. Totalling at 250 kits, that’s $43,750 in PurEpoxy Epoxy.
